Win Tickets to Mexican Summer’s Five-Year Anniversary Fest

Mexican Summer

When the independent label Mexican Summer started as a club five years ago in Brooklyn, the focus was on producing beautiful and limited edition vinyl records. Since then, the label, which is still proudly based in the Greenpoint neighborhood, has grown into a broader recording company that heavily flirts with both analog and digital music media.

Now they’re celebrating with a big blowout for their five-year anniversary from October 11-12. Come down to see a section of their artist roster including Ariel Pink, Spiritualized, and Tamaryn at Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn — or, better yet, win tickets to the music festival from Rdio by entering below! We’re giving away three sets of prizes — a pair of tickets for Friday, a pair of tickets for Saturday, and the deluxe prize: A pair of tickets for both days, VIP access, and exclusive merch.

Thanks for entering our giveaway for Mexican Summer's Five Year Anniversary Festival! Winners have been contacted as of 10/4.

With more than 100 releases in a diverse catalog that includes work from artists like Best Coast, Washed Out, Kurt Vile, and Oneohtrix Point Never, there’s a lot to discover at Mexican Summer and subsidiary label Software. Start with these five favorites (listed in no particular order), all of which have made essential contributions to the identity of the label.

FIVE ESSENTIAL MEXICAN SUMMER AND SOFTWARE ALBUMS

  • Tamaryn - Tender New Signs
Mexican Summer introduced this New Zealand-born singer to the world, and solidified a place for a new international shoegaze queen on this debut.

  • Peaking Lights - Lucifer
A psychedelic pop couple from the Midwest, Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis have grown up with the label, even including their young son’s vocals on this third album.

  • The Fresh & Onlys - Long Slow Dance
San Francisco’s indie darlings joined the label in 2012 and blew beyond being a regional best-kept secret with this effort.

  • The Young - Voyagers Of Legend
The members of the Austin rock outfit came into their own sound with the haunting, punk-tagged ballads on their 2010 album.

  • Mike Wexler - Dispossession
The second album from Brooklyn’s boundary-bypassing singer/guitarist was his first for Mexican Summer.

The GRAMMY Awards®, held this year at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 10th, is the one true sport enjoyed by the music business every year. So it only makes sense that the GRAMMY®s would collaborate with leading athletes to get their favorite music picks in advance of the “big game.”
