Artist SpotlightsThis Week on Rdio

Artist to Watch: 5 Questions with Strange Talk

Strange Talk

Strange Talk's debut Wind-Up Records release, Cast Away, has countless electrifying tunes that are bound to get stuck on repeat and never leave your head. We sat down with the Melbourne-based electro-pop band to discuss their new album, upcoming tour, and being one of Rdio’s 2014 Artists To Watch.

1. Where did you write the record?

We wrote the album in two completely different places. The first was a farm in Victoria in the country and the second was on the coast of Melbourne at a friend’s beach house. We locked ourselves away for several hours a day writing.

2. Were there any favorite artists that made an impact on the album’s sound or songwriting process?

There are so many musicians who made an impact on Cast Away! Michael Jackson, Daft Punk, and Queen are just a few of our long time influences. The album is a reflection of all the music we’ve listened to through the years of our lives and we put all these influences in a blender and out came the album.

3. How excited are you to finally debut these songs live in the US? What will the touring experience around this record be like?

We've spent a fair amount of time in the U.S. thus far playing in various cities, but never with an album released. So playing the songs that haven’t been released is always hard as no one knows them. It’s definitely a new chapter for us having an album out now.

4. You recently recorded an Rdio Session at SXSW. Can you tell us about the experience? What can fans expect from the live session compared to the album?

We try to make the live show different to the recording. We're big believers in having that difference because it seems so boring otherwise.

5. Who are some artists you think are on the verge of making it big and what is it like being chosen as one of Rdio’s 2014 Artists to Watch?

Warpaint and Great Good Fine Ok. To choose us out of all the other bands is very humbling and a huge honor! Thank you!

Rdio Partners with The Grateful Dead's Bob Weir to Improve Streaming Audio Quality

Music is our passion at Rdio. We believe music is more than just a background beat. It's an expression of our moods, encompasses our personal stories, and has always been and always will be one of the most powerful and shareable forms of art.

As a reflection of that passion, Rdio has aligned with The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir on an initiative called “Artists For Quality.” Our joint mission is to ignite and lead discussions on inequity in streaming audio quality, and to commit to both artists and music fans to establish the highest standard of streaming quality in the digital music space.

As the initial step in this program, Rdio has begun to convert its entire existing catalog to the AAC format and will deliver 320KbPS as our new standard — without increasing our price. In addition, and as part of our ongoing commitment to the artist community, Rdio will work closely with artists and labels from around the world to continue to raise the bar higher on streaming quality where sufficient network bandwidth exists, and to improve stream delivery in markets around the world where network quality and bandwidth are often inconsistent.

Through Bob Weir and his network of friends, from music legends to top emerging artists, we are looking forward to working together to ensure that Rdio delivers the best possible audio quality option to both artists and music fans.

Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about this important and exciting venture.

Send a Raven! Game of Thrones Characters Battle it Out on Rdio

Game-thrones genric logo

Not that we are obsessed or anything, but Game of Thrones will be upon us in mere hours (yes, we are counting). In the preamble to this auspicious event fans of the immensely popular HBO show have gotten creative this week and descended on Rdio to create a slice of Westeros by building in-character profiles and playlists for the show's protagonists and antagonists. And we are loving it!

As you patiently await the Season 4 premiere this Sunday, check out some true fan obsession with these playlists from your favorite Game of Thrones characters. Rdio’s "GoT" the perfect distraction — and accompaniment to your viewing parties — with these clever profiles from Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, King Joffrey, Jon Snow, and Hodor of Winterfell that are stirring up the drama and laughs.

And for more amusement, be sure to read the hilarious playlist comments posted from one in-character profile to another. See King Joffrey’s sociopathic and tyrannical jab on Arya Stark’s "Stick 'Em With The Pointy End" playlist here and what our favorite Mother of Dragons thinks of Jon Snow (even though they’ve never met) here.

Game of Thrones, Season 4 premieres this Sunday, April 6 on HBO. Follow your favorite characters on Rdio throughout the season to see new music and playlists added from the Seven Kingdoms, Essos, and beyond the Wall.

Daenerys Targaryen unleashes a fierce set of queen tunes on Ascending and compiles a hilarious set of Mother’s Day Songs — no surprise she’s really into dragon songs.

It’s not easy being drunk all the time, but Tyrion Lannister makes it look effortless. J. Cole, UB40, Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars are on hand to help him celebrate wine, women, and money on his Things I Like a Lot and I Prefer Fun Sized playlists.

Arya Stark's been kicking ass and taking names all over Westeros. Check out the music that preps our favorite spitfire for revenge on her Stick ‘Em with the Pointy End playlist and her collection of favorite Girl vs Boy tomboy theme songs.

It’s good to be King Joffrey, and he gives it up to his all-time favorite person with his Me, Myself & I and Inspiration playlists.

Our favorite handsome bastard and member of the Night’s Watch Jon Snow knows how to stay warm while bumping his Night’s Watch Slow Jamz and Just Chilln’ playlists.

Loyal servant and Big Man Hodor of Winterfell is always at the side of young Bran Stark. He doesn’t say much, but we love tha drops and big bodied, hip-hop beats on Hodurrrrrr.
