Antibalas might be Brooklyn based, but since 1998, the Afro-beat orchestra have been channeling all the horn-driven funk and rhythm of Cuban and West African music with authenticity and gusto. On August 7, the collective released their new self-titled album, Antibalas.
The band are very politically-minded, so when you’ve finished listening to the full-length, why not begin their playlist of Antibalas’ Favorite Songs of Protest? Says Antibalas’ Martin Perna: “Music has always served as a vehicle for speaking truth to power, and giving voice to the voiceless. Protest music of the ‘60s and ‘70s is at the core of the musical and spiritual inspiration for Antibalas. I curated this playlist my favorite political songs whose messages are as relevant now as they were when they first hit the airwaves. May these songs entertain, uplift, and inspire you to imagine and create a more peaceful world.”
