Dig Sean Born’s Exclusive '90s Rap Playlist on Rdio

Seanborn

Earlier this week, D.C.-hailing rapper Sean Born released his debut full-length, Behind the Scale, the culmination of years of hard work. The album features “Go Hard,” the single that first brought Born to listeners’ attention.

As an homage to the rappers who inspired him, Born compiled an exclusive playlist of his favorite ‘90s rap, including Notorious B.I.G., Nas, 2pac, and other legendary MCs. Peep the playlist, along with Born’s notes, below, and don’t forget to check out Behind the Scale.

Sean Born ‘90s Playlist

  • Eric B. & Rakim - “I Know You Got Soul”
My mom gave me a little tape player and a mixtape when I was young. This and “I Ain't No Joke” helped me pop that tape.

  • Slick Rick - “Children’s Story”
“Dave the dope fiend, shooting dope / Don't know the meanin’ of water nor soap.” Ricky D was doin’ stuff with his flow that few can do today.

  • NWA - “Appetite for Destruction”
    Hardest sh*t ever.

  • Ice Cube - “Jackin’ for Beats”
    “Gimme that beat fool...”

  • Snoop Dogg - “Doggy Dogg World”
This song crushes stuff people put out today... Timeless, just like Snoop.

  • Redman - “Tonight’s Da Night”
Dopest sh*t I ever heard at the time... Remember “Head Banger”? Hit/Def squad salute.

  • Scarface - “Jesse James”
    Diary was a classic!!

  • Nas - “New York State of Mind”
“Str8 out the f*ckin’ dungeons of rap...” “I ran like a cheetah wit thoughts of an assassin...” Nas raps visual and Primo is a legend.

  • Notorious B.I.G. - “Unbelievable”
“It ain't nuffin, you know Big be handlin’ / With the Mac in the Ac door panelin’...” Primo with another classic.

  • Gangstarr - “Mass Appeal”
We were lucky enough to come from an era where hip hop was played on the radio. This and Jeru used to knock in D.C.

  • Method Man - “Biscuits”/”What The Blood Clot”
I could thru “C.R.E.A.M.” or “Bring Da Ruckus,” but these two songs are perfect WU to me. I gotta listen to both anytime I play Wu.

  • 2pac - “Me Against The World”
Pre-Death Wow Pac at his best. One of my favorite albums.

  • Nas - “The World Is Yours”
Will Nas ever do another Pete Rock song? I hope so.

  • Raekwon - “Glaciers of Ice”
I ran this joint into the ground trying to figure out what RZA did. Don't waste your time doing the same. Check the fly sh*t!

  • Raekwon - “Verbal Intercourse” (feat. Nas & Ghostface Killah)
Nobody has ever come close to topping Nas' verse on here, IMO.

  • Notorious B.I.G. - “Kick In The Door”
I heard Puff wasn't feelin’ this at first... WTF? “Nothin’ in hip hop tops hearin’ a Primo beat for the first time” - Kenn Starr.. I agree.

  • Notorious B.I.G. - “Ten Crack Commandments”
Lol... Cheat code... Even if you don’t like BIG, you have to say he was the best.

  • Ghostface Killah - “Motherless Child”
I don’t even have a comment for this.

  • Max B - “I’m So High”
Always wanted to use that sample and Max killed it. Salute!
