MusicNew Music Weekly

New Music Tuesday, May 3, 2011

A little of this and a little of that—today’s New Releases and the resulting New Music Tuesday playlist are dedicated to the sprawling and newly available lineup of styles and musicians. Stevie Nicks, Lady Antebellum, Musiq Soulchild and Jennifer Lopez share the main stage, though you can check out things unexpected, like Hail Mary Mallon, Gruff Rhys, The Jolly Boys or Com Truise. For pop culture bonus points, queue up Harvest (Music from the Motion Picture) or the Thor orchestrated soundtrack.

Playlist Notes

  • Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two: The Beastie Boys have long proved their cultural relevance and ability to make beats along with the changing times—instead of sitting around while MCA fought cancer, they went to work. The result is as fun and energetic as some of their earlier classic albums.

  • Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues: Fleet Foxes aren’t known for prolific re-issuing of albums, singles, EPs or remixes. Instead, they produce a familiar and honest sound with interwoven harmonies, all of which are expertly displayed in their second studio album, Helplessness.

  • Dave Depper, The Ram Project: If you’re a musician in the midst of a writer’s block or performer’s funk, a crazy project is sometimes the only way to overcome. In the case of musician Dave Depper (Loch Lomond, Norfolk & Western, Blue Giant), he tackles re-recording Paul and Linda McCartney’s classic album, Ram, by himself in 30 days.

  • Lady Antebellum, Just A Kiss: If you need more Lady Antebellum now, they’re happy to share the first single off their as yet untitled new album, expected later this year.

  • Wild Beasts, Smother: With the same dedication to falsetto as another New Music Tuesday release this week, Antony and the Johnson’s Swanlights EP, Wild Beast digs into the full range and emotion of the upper registers.

  • Kode9 & The Spaceape, Black Sun: As hinted in NMT playlists past, Hyperdub’s head honcho released his album with The Spaceape, full of other-worldly dance beats.
