New Music Tuesday, May 31, 2011

There are some big names in this week’s New Releases—bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Eddie Vedder, Beyoncé, My Morning Jacket and Dave Matthews Band. But the music poised to make the biggest impact on you might just be from bands you haven’t heard yet. So listen to something new from your favorite bands, but queue up new music from Favourite Sons, Frank Ocean, Sebastian or The Vaccines.

Playlist Notes

  • Eddie Vedder, Ukulele Songs: Eddie Vedder’s second solo album is very literally Ukulele Songs. While some people might question why the Pearl Jam lead singer picked the 5-string lute, it’s a delightful showcase of Vedder’s distinctive voice and talent.

  • Jessica 6, White Horse (Remix): Jessica 6 is an NYC trio featuring Nomi Ruiz, from Hercules and the Love Affair. This soulful single and its accompanying music video are making the rounds on the web—check out this teaser and stay tuned for their upcoming album, See the Light.

  • Death Cab for Cutie, Codes and Keys: If You Are A Tourist’s favorable reception is any indication, new and old fans alike will love Death Cab for Cutie’s seventh studio album. It’s rich with Ben Gibbard’s familiar vocals and features more songwriting from guitarist Chris Walla.

  • The Vaccines, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?: After releasing a steady stream of singles, these buzzing Brits have dropped their debut album stateside. Their sub-three minute tracks and indie rock sound brings a few iconic bands to mind (The Ramones, The Clash, The Smiths), but this foursome has an addictive sound all their own.

  • Favourite Sons, The Great Deal of Love: Featuring homegrown warmth similar to Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros, Favourite Sons pave their own way with sweet call-and-response and a sound that recalls music played on a back porch in summer.
