New on Rdio: Epitaph Records

What started as one band’s DIY-effort Label turned into an engine for Southern California punk rock. Epitaph Records began with Bad Religion, but in its 20+ years has grown an impressive roster of bands and four sister Labels (Hellcat Records, ANTI-, Fat Possum Records, Burning Heart Records). We’re incredibly pleased to have so many great bands and musicians newly part of Rdio’s catalog, thanks to Epitaph.

New Music Tuesday from the Old and New

The sounds of careered musicians like Wanda Jackson, Talib Kweli, Cold War Kids and John Vanderslice co-mingle with the upstart debuts of Delicate Steve, Grouplove and Cloud Nothings in this week’s New Music Tuesday playlist. Listen for the familiar and stay for the unexpectedly great from this week’s New Releases.

Playlist notes:

  • Talib Kweli, Gutter Rainbows: With an album title inspired by such a lofty work as Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, Talib Kweli throws around his musical heft in his fifth solo album. Producers on Gutter Rainbows include Ski Beatz, who recently released his own debut album.

  • Grouplove, Grouplove: Since fate had them meet in Greece, this Los Angeles-based band went ahead and recorded a self-titled debut EP. Undoubtedly, you’ll want to hear more of their intensely focused story-songwriting.

  • Peter Bjorn And John, Second Chance: Beyond their biggest single (obviously Young Folks), this threesome have maintained a freshman-like enthusiasm for the music they create. Second Chance is a pick from their upcoming sixth album, Gimme Some.

  • Corinne Bailey Rae, The Lovers E.P.: With a voice that’s clear and warm as a bell, Corinne Bailey Rae covers love songs from Belly, Paul McCartney, Bob Marley, Doris Day, and the ultimate proto-love song performer, Prince.

  • Deerhoof, Deerhoof vs. Evil: Recording studio be damned, Deerhoof wrestled their bold, finely tuned and experimental sounds into their twelfth album.

  • Wanda Jackson, The Party Ain’t Over: With a discography as long as a career criminal’s rap sheet, Wanda Jackson went back into the studio one more time with the nouveau-rockabilly Jack White as producer. Be happy that she did—Jackson rocks and rolls with a distinctive voice, carved out of a lifetime of use.

  • John Vanderslice, White Wilderness: The lonely singer-songwriter seeks solace with an orchestra—Vanderslice recorded with San Francisco’s Magik*Magik Orchestra to create an album in 3 days.

New on Rdio: Domino Records

Continuing our promise to highlight the fantastic music and Labels that recently joined Rdio from Merlin, today we’re jumping over the pond to look at UK-based Domino Records. Even though Domino began outside the U.S., they’ve made a considerable impact on our musical tastes here in the States, partly due to their strong U.S. branch.

Whether it’s newer groups like the Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective, or long-time favorites like Queens of the Stone Age and The Kills, Domino has an impressive roster of albums and artists.

Tips & Tricks

Tips & Tricks: A Queue Keyboard Shortcut

There’s never a dull moment here in the Rdio office. Since our launch in August 2010, we’ve been working full-time on a slew of exciting projects, including expanding our catalog, streamlining our fleet of mobile apps, and continuing to update and improve the site.

We wanted a way to keep our ever-growing community of music lovers in-the-know about the latest new features, so today marks the launch of Rdio’s Tips & Tricks series.

Every few weeks we’ll highlight a feature—it might be brand new, it might be top secret, or it might be just plain cool.

This first trick we’re spotlighting is the latest addition to Rdio’s keyboard shortcuts — Command (on Mac) or Control (on PC) + U will instantly show your Queue.

Designed for easy access and managing your queue, this “flyover” shows you what’s playing now, and what’s coming up. Drag and drop any item to change the order, or hit the “x” to remove it completely. This is also a fantastic way to manage your Rdio Stations—the flyover gives you the power to adjust the number of songs, mix in artists, or totally veto any recommended tracks. Just hit Command (or Control for PC) + U another time to hide the flyover, and sit back and enjoy your finely crafted Queue.

This Week's New Music

With a decidedly more lo-fi bend than last year’s New Music Tuesdays, this week’s music is a great soundtrack for an energized and forward-looking new year. The Decemberists, the Smith Westerns, and the Eulogies all have new albums available, and you’ll get a preview of albums-to-come with singles from the new Kanye West and Jay-Z collaboration, the sweet Submarines, and Asobi Seksu.

Playlist Notes

  • Eulogies, Tear the Fences Down: The first and second time were a charm—will the third be as well? Here is another album from L.A. band Eulogies, with hooks and good-times aplenty.

  • The Decemberists, The King is Dead: Colin Meloy and his merry band of music makers strike again, this time with the help of legend Gillian Welch. Come for the instrumentation, stay for the enjoyable songwriting.

  • Mogwai, Rano Pano b/w Hasenheide: This Mogwai release features a single from their upcoming album as well as a B-side for old times sake.

  • Smith Westerns, Dye it Blonde: The Chicago band Smith Westerns have grown up a lot since their self-titled debut album. This sophomore album is full of the same fuzziness but with defined song writing that is a pure pleasure for rocking-out.

  • Kanye West, Jay-Z, H.A.M.: It turns out that the many rumors of ‘Ye and Z holing up together in the studio to create music aren’t falsehoods. Here’s the first song they’ve released off their upcoming new album.

  • WIN WIN, RELEASERPM: When a former Spank Rock producer and collaborator come together and throw the vocals of a Gang Gang Dance singer into the mix, you get a high-brow party song ready for the circuit.
