New Features Come to iOS and Android Apps

iOS and Android

We’re thrilled to introduce updates to both iOS and Android apps, bringing a unified Rdio experience regardless of platform. Among various UI improvements, you’ll find the following new features:

  • Find People — We believe music should be social which is why following other listeners is now easier on our mobile apps. Tap Find People, a new addition to the side navigation, to see a curated list of recommended friends and their music taste (based on your connected Twitter and Facebook) alongside hand-picked artists and influencers like Alan Carr and Little Boots.

  • Label Pages — Just like on our web and desktop apps, you can now search for a record label and find its top albums and artists.

  • Updated Side Navigation — The side navigation features a new blurred background and a cleaner interface, making it easier to access your profile, sort through playlists, and more.

Get hands-on with the new features yourself — download Rdio for iOS or Rdio for Android now. Drop us a line on Twitter and Facebook to share your thoughts!

Discover New Music With Rdio and Shazam

Shazam

We’ve banded together with Shazam, the music identification tool, to make discovering your new favourite song and artist easier than ever, no matter where you are.

Now anyone with the Shazam app for iOS or Android can listen to entire songs after tagging them by clicking the “Listen Free on Rdio” link. Seamlessly flow from identifying a never-before-heard track to playing it on Rdio, sharing it with friends, or finding more music by that artist within Shazam.

Rdio Unlimited subscribers can access the full experience in the app immediately. Users new to Rdio can try the mobile app free for 14 days to take advantage of the feature.

Originally launched last fall in the U.S., the integration is now available in Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

Tap Your Toes To AUM Fidelity’s Jazz Catalog

Aum

New York’s 16-year-old independent label AUM Fidelity was inspired by the do-it-yourself spirit of punk record labels that nurtured and developed original acts through music released without major label assistance. That work ethic as well as the passion to encourage true individuality has been channeled into a different side of the music spectrum to highlight the jazz and avant-garde soul worlds.

Rdio is now home to AUM’s catalog online, and we encourage you to begin exploring it through the work of such label notables as improvisational rock band Shrimp Boat, alto saxophonist Darius Jones, pianist Matthew Shipp, the late saxophonist David S. Ware, and free jazz double bassist William Parker. The term “aum” represents the soundless sound of the harmonious universe, but we think you’ll find that AUM Fidelity represents a wide range of musical ideas.

Start your sonic journey with, Wisdom of Uncertainty, a six-song collaboration between David S. Ware, Matthew Shipp, William Parker, and Susie Ibarra below.

Introducing Vdio

When we launched in 2010, our ambition was to design the best experience for the watch-and-listen-anywhere, share-everything, stream-it-now era of content distribution. We started with Rdio and built the most beautiful way to discover, listen, and share an endless stream of music — 18 million songs. Today, we’re previewing our next step on that journey, Vdio, a beautiful new way to buy, rent, and share your favourite movies and TV shows with your friends, in real-time. We’re offering Rdio Unlimited subscribers a special preview of Vdio, right now, right here.

Vdio

The first thing you’ll notice about Vdio is that it’s designed to solve the “what to watch” problem. It’s not just that we’ve got amazing content, but that the experience is now geared to get you from searching to watching faster. We’re introducing the notion of Sets — playlists for TV shows and movies — so anyone can make and share lists of their favourites, making it easier than ever to discover new stuff. Or, you can just check out what your friends are watching in the moment and jump in. Beyond that, Vdio has the beautiful design and social features that people love about Rdio, with plenty more to come.

So, what exactly can you watch on Vdio? Everything from the newest releases to cult classics and a whole lot in between from the major studios and networks. Right now, you can watch Argo, Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, Brave, Prometheus, Lawless, and thousands of other hit movies. You can down a cocktail with Don Draper on Mad Men, tune in to the Dowager’s latest quip on Downton Abbey, death-grip your armchair during Homeland, or marvel at the jaw-dropping perfection of Breaking Bad. TV shows are available the day after they air and you can subscribe to seasons at a discount. We plan on adding new titles and bonus content daily, so be sure to check back regularly to see what’s new.

For the moment, Vdio is only available to Rdio Unlimited subscribers in the US and UK. To get you rolling, we’re giving all Rdio Unlimited subscribers a £20 credit to use on Vdio (same goes for anyone who subscribes in the next 60 days). Vdio currently works on the Web and iPad, with other devices and platforms in the plan.

So, find a comfy chair, grab your iPad or PC, and catch up on the TV episodes you missed last season or find out how Argo took home Best Film at the BAFTAs — all on us, of course.

Thanks for being an Rdio fan. Enjoy!
