Rdio + Shazam: Now With More Power

SZ_Logo_1_2_Blue_RGB_300

The magical power of the Shazam app, which allows you to identify, explore and listen to music, has just gotten stronger with a fresh and full redesign that includes enhanced functionality for Rdio users.

Shazam fans can already use the Listen Free on Rdio mode on Shazam’s tag screen to hear full length versions of songs identified with the app and every song you Shazam is stored automatically in a personal playlist on Rdio called “My Shazam Tracks” — allowing you to revisit all the music that catches your ear and made you pull out your phone.

Now with the latest update, Rdio users can add any song, from anywhere in Shazam, to their “My Shazam Tracks” playlist, whether they Shazamed the song or found it in Pulse, Shazam’s music discovery feed of popular and trending music. We’re excited for you to try it out and see how much this opens up your playlist possibilities.

The most recent Shazam update is available now in both Free and Encore versions for iOS; the Android version will be available in a few weeks.

To connect your Rdio account with Shazam, follow the instructions in your Shazam newsfeed or go into your Shazam settings and select Connect to Rdio.

Happy Shazaming!

Developer App: Wake Up

Wake Up

As if you need another excuse to hit the snooze button, this month’s Developer App, Wake Up, rouses you awake with your favourite Rdio playlist.

Download Wake Up, an alarm clock app that lulls you to sleep and gets you going with any Rdio playlist you create or subscribe to. Pick your morning mix, customize your snooze time, and set your alarm. There’s even an Airplay feature so that you can wirelessly stream to other devices without ever getting out of bed.

The app itself is visually dynamic and minimal to a fault — am/pm is “set automatically” which means that the app chooses the meridiem based on 12-hour intervals. So if you want a 7:00am alarm, you will need to wait until 7:00pm to set it. Follow developer David Brunow and designer Jenni Leder on Twitter for future updates.

Developer App: Talk Radio

Talk Radio

Talk Radio is to Rdio as Siri is to the iPhone. With just the sound of your voice, this month’s Developer App plays what you want to hear without navigating with a mouse.

First, make sure your browser of choice is Chrome, version 25 or later. Then head over to Talk Radio to start the music. Hit the spacebar and tell the app what you want to hear — say an artist like, “Play Jim James,” or a genre such as, “Play indie pop.” You can even get niche-music-nerd levels of specific like, “Play chill music in the style of smooth jazz.”

Talk Radio utilizes Chrome’s brand new Web Speech API and The Echo Nest’s snazzy search function to make beautiful music together. When the speech recognizer hears, “Play music by dead mouse,” The Echo Nest can smartly resolve to “deadmau5.”

The app was built by Paul Lamere who also created Boil The Frog, our pick for last month’s Developer App. Follow Lamere on Twitter to see what he’s cooking up next.

Head over to synco.fm and connect your Rdio account. Choose any or all of the four categories to sync — your favourite artists, favourite albums, trending artists, and trending albums. The favourite and trending albums categories are populated by the track listings from the actual albums. Favourite and trending artists pulls the top tracks from the artist’s Top Songs Station, mixing your most loved tracks with new discoveries.

No need to fuss if you have an ever changing queue of trending artists and albums — Synco will automatically update your offline music periodically according to your listening habits.

Developer Apps: Typing Karaoke

Screen Shot 2012-06-12 at 2.58.29 PM

Say farewell to productivity for the next half hour — this month’s featured Developer App is Typing Karaoke.

Developed by Travis Chen at the most recent Hollywood Hackday, Typing Karaoke is described as Mavis Beacon meets Guitar Hero. Pick from a selection of songs like Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe” or Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” and try your best to type along to the lyrics. Make sure to warm up those digits because the faster and more accurate you are, the more points you’ll score. Are you dying to transcribe a certain tune? Follow Travis on Twitter and suggest a song.

Think you have what it takes to make the next awesome app? Then have a look at Rdio’s Developer’s Page to register for an API key. We have a Github and API Google Group to help you get started. Who knows? Your creation can be worth some money through the Rdio Affiliate Program.
