Celebrate Canada Day on Rdio

This Sunday is Canada Day! That means parades, barbecues, and waving your Canadian flag like mad, all in the name of celebrating the day our colonies became the sovereign nation of Canada. You know darn well this land deserves it.

Canada Day also means another great thing about being Canadian: Goin’ to the Cottage! Back in May, we wrote a post all about (ahem, aboot) the great tradition, and made a playlist of the tunes that reminded us of it. In the name of Canadian independence, why not add another tune or two now?

The Rdio you’re familiar with remains but we've updated the look and feel of every single page. We've done away with the many boxes, lines, and gradients — Rdio is lighter, brighter, easier on the eye. It’s faster, too.

There’s a whole lot of loud on the New Music Tuesday playlist this week. Metalcore heroes The Devil Wears Prada and pop-punk stalwarts The Offspring are both making a ruckus, as is rapper Philthy Rich. Fuzzy noise-pop outfits A Place to Bury Strangers and DIIV are bringing their own wall-of-sound.

Of course, there’s a little peace and quiet, too: reunited Country posse Beachwood Sparks have a new full-length, and there’s plenty more to hear in our New Releases and in our playlist notes below.

  • Yeasayer - “Longevity”
    As if first single “Henrietta” wasn’t tantalizing enough, the Brooklyn indie dance-pop troupe are now teasing new album Fragrant World with “Longevity.” The track is a funked-up slow jam propelled by shuffling drums and Chris Keating’s yearning wails, the perfect tune for those hot summer nights.

  • Maroon 5 - Overexposed
    The L.A. pop quintet’s fourth LP was led by the earworm “Payphone,” and espouses everything this band are about: big hooks, danceability, and just the right amount of sentimentality.

  • The Flaming Lips - The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwendz
    The Lips’ latest is a compilation of collaborative songs with the likes of Ke$ha, Erykah Badu, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Bon Iver, Yoko Ono, and more. Somehow, it all works — hear how on Heady Fwendz.

  • Trace Adkins - “Them Lips (On Mine)”
    It’s been less than a year since the country star’s last album, but he’s already back at work with new single “Them Lips (On Mine),” a tuneful come-on full of swagger and countrified romanticism.

  • Linkin Park - LIVING THINGS
    The hard rock rockers have matured with every album. LIVING THINGS does the same, but finds the band channeling all the energy of their first few albums.

Chicago indie-pop troupe Gold Motel’s lighthearted pop tunes have brought them quick attention — their 2010 debut Summer House earned the band glowing reviews from outlets like SPIN and Nylon, and tour slots opening for like-minded melody-makers fun., Kate Nash, and OK Go.

The band’s next full-length is the self-titled Gold Motel — it finds the band in a more introspective mood. Listen to The Darcys’ Celebrity-Submitted “Post-Soul” Playlist

Since 2007, Toronto foursome The Darcys have balanced guitar-driven pop tunes with influences like electronic, shoegaze, and soul to arrive at their romantic-yet-unpretentious sound.

The Darcys are now on Rdio, too, which means you can follow the band to see what music makes them tick. Recently, it’s been music that follows in the soul tradition — big, swooning melodies, passionate horns, swinging rhythms — so they asked a bunch of their musician friends to contribute their favorite “post-soul” songs to an ongoing playlist. Festival Watch: Sled Island

Sledisland

Calgary, Alberta’s Sled Island music festival leapt out of the gates in 2007, quickly becoming one of Canada’s best summer festivals. In past years the four-day fest has nabbed such international talent as Spoon, Cat Power, Mogwai, Dan Deacon, Grizzly Bear, The Breeders, The Buzzcocks, and local talent such as Chad VanGaalen, Braids, Final Fantasy, and Fucked Up.

The 2012 edition, held from June 20-23, features a similarly excellent line-up: Feist, The Hold Steady, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Timber Timbre, and Archers of Loaf, among others.
